    The Monks Scorpion
Once in a monastery two monks walked about doing their morning duties. As they passed a bucket, filled with rain, they saw a scorpion was drowning in the water. One monk reached in to save the creature. As soon as his fingers touched the panicking Scorpion, it stung him and the monk dropped the Scorpion back into the water. The monk sighed, and reached back in. This time he got his grip a little firmer, but still dropped the Scorpion when he was stung. He kept reaching in, as his friend looked on in confusion. After dozens of attempts, the other monk spoke up saying “Brother, why do you keep trying to save that scorpion? It stings you every time you come near it.  The monk paused before reaching in again and smiled. As another sting bit into his hand, he took a fallen leaf from the ground and pulled the scorpion out to safety. He finally said: “Because it is his nature to sting, and my nature to save. Don’t forget brother, soon either I’ll stop feeling the pain of the sting and he will be saved, or he will stop being afraid and be saved.’ Compassion cannot be stopped so easily.’

    Scorpion Words
    In
    Chinese writing, a character for
    scorpion
    stands for the number
    ten thousand
    . According to J. Singleton.
There had been no written character for the number, but there had been several for " scorpion ", one of which was pronounced the same way as the number (
    wan
) -- so the character was redefined to mean "
    ten thousand
", although still drawn with the claws on top and the tail curled up on the other side of its body.
    In philosophy, Lao Zi
    writes about
    ten thousand things
    in the Tao Te Ching
In Zen Buddhism, the "10,000 Things" is a term meaning all of phenomenal reality.
    Scorpio
    The Akkadians
called the constellation we know as Scorpio,
    Girtab
, meaning the Seizer, or Stinger, and "Place Where One Bows Down." According to Allen (
    Starnames
    : Their Lore and Meaning
) some early translators of the cuneiform text rendered its name, "the Double Sword" and here you have a dynamic double scorpion.

From the beginning the location of RALUNG was recognized as especially auspicious:
The eight auspicious symbols adorned the surrounding: The mountain in front of the monastery appeared in the form of a white conch turning clock-wise; the peak of Rala pass appeared like a precious open parasol; the peak behind Pokya appeared like a brimming vase; the Tsenchu peak appeared like a victory banner hoisted high; the Yangon hill appeared like a pair of golden fish; the ground at Gormo appeared like a golden wheel; the hill in the direction of Penthang appeared like an open lotus stem with the twin streams appearing like two birds facing each other; and Gyamo meadow appeared like an auspicious knot.
